Wat Trapang Thong is a central point of Old Sukhothai. Built on an island set inside a water reservoir, around the 14th century, it is accessible through some wooden bridges ans scenery and atmosphere is amazing.

In this ancient temple, still in use, stands out a great chedi and a footprint of Buddha.

Every year this complex, which also contains a more recent sanctuary, is the venue for the Loy Krathong festival. It is ideal for relaxing in the late afternoon, after a day of cycling through the historical park, considered by Unesco a world heritage site.

Location and how to get there:

This complex, located in the heart of the old city is close to the main entrance of the central sector of the historical park, as well as near the National Museum.

The Wat Saphan Hin temple, founded in the 13th century, is known to contain a colossal Buddha image.

It is located in the west section of Sukhothai historical park, on top of a hill, visible from the road. From here, to reach the temple, you have to climb the cobbled ramp, at the end of which is the image of Buddha.

This figure, Called Phra Attharot by the locals, is about 13 meters high, standing in the Abhaya Mudra position, with his right hand raised with the palm facing forward, representing protection, peace and benevolence.

Wat Saphan Hin is probably the most important point of interest in the West sector. In this, more than the temples themselves, what truly justifies the visit is the process, the walk. Along the way you will find several vestiges of ancient structures, and, being there, why not see the rest of the temples.

Location and how to get there:

• Following the north exit of the city wall, entering the west section of the park, Wat Saphan Hin will be the first point of interest to come from your right side.

Take advantage of your location and go to Wat Si Chum, which is right there, about 1 km away. The same ticket gives you the right to visit both.

Wat Sorasak temple, founded in the 15th century, is located in the central sector of Sukhothai historical park, still within the city walls.

Framed in a wide area, where the green stands out and it is possible to glimpse other temples and ruins, the highlight resides in the sulptures of elephants that, side by side, make the base of the chedi and give caracter to the place.

They are a testimony to the influence of the religious culture of Sri Lanka, in the architecture of the kingdom that came to originate what we now know as Thailand.

To go there you have to spend 100 baht ( $3,10 / 2,7€) regarding the entrance fee for the central sector of the historical park.

Location and how to get there:

Wat Sorosak is located in the northern part of the central sector of the park, near the Sanluang gate, the north entrance of the city wall. It is close to Wat Phra Phai Luang.

The Wat Chetuphon temple, which is practically all in ruins, is believed to have had a great importance in the last period of the Kingdom of Sukhothai.

However, what survived the passage of time, makes a visit worthwhile.

The exact period of the foundation, of  this which is the largest temple in the South sector of Sukhothai historical park, is unknown. But it is believed to have been built in the fourteenth century. It houses a Mandapa with a huge Buddha image and also some small Chedis.

Unlike most temples in Thailand, there is no main Chedi, where relics of Buddha or monks are usually deposited. Here the principal element of veneration is the Mandapa.

How to get there: 

• It is located in the south sector of the park, about two kilometers from the south entrance of the city wall.

Wat Si Chum, perhaps the second most popular temple in Sukhothai, is known for its 15m high Buddha image, called Phra Atchana (“the still Buddha”).

The statue is located inside a huge Mandapa. This one, conceived in a very singular form, has a passage to the inside and the statue. To this day, the exact purpose of the passage  in this Mandapa in not clear. This temple also has some of the oldest murals in Thailand.

Wat Si Chum is undoubtedly one of the main attraction points of the park. As well, one of the most representative and important monuments in the history of Thailand, both for its particularities and for its beauty.

This temple, abandoned  in the period of the Ayutthaya kingdom, underwent restoration works around the 50’s. You can not pass through Sukhothai without visiting it.

Location and how to get there:

It is located in the northern sector, just north of the city walls. Not far from Wat Phra Phai Luang, from where you can head west on a secondary road.

After touring Sukhothai historical park by bike, it is at the Ramkhamhaeng National Museum that you will find a few more pieces of the puzzle, which is the history of Sukhothai.

This museum, inaugurated in the sixties, is full of statues,  stone inscriptions, deities carved in bronze and more. Visiting this space helps to make sense of such a distant and rich story and see the big picture a bit more clear.

The entry costs 150 baht ( around 4€ / $5),  not included on the historical park central sector entrance fee.

The museum is located in the central sector, not far Wat Mahathat and Wat Traphang Thong.

Wat Trapang Ngoen temple, founded in the 14th century, is in the central sector of Sukhothai historical park, near Wat Mahathat.

What really stands out is a seated Buddha image facing a vast lake. As a backgound, a well preserved chedi  and in front of it a series of columns that still presist , resisting the passage of time.

The framing of this temple also makes it unique in the context of the park. Facing an island, which lies in the interior of a lake,  in an area full of Lotus flowers, wich makes it an absolute must-see.

To visit  Wat Trapang Ngoen the ticket costs 100 baht (2,7€ / $3,10 ), regarding the entrance fee to the central sector of the historical park.

Location and how to get there:

The complex is  located in the central sector, 300 meters west of Wat Mahathat and you should visit both of them in a row.

The temple of Wat Sa Si, built in the 14th century, is located on the central sector island, near Wat Mahathat.

The highlight in this sanctuary, flanked by a body of water filled with lotus flowers, is a seated Buddha, accompanied by 6 relatively well-preserved chedis and several columns.

In addition, there is a standing Buddha with two large chedis in the background. It is here that the Loy Kratong festival (festival of light) is held annually, in November. On this day, the locals deposit thousands of candles to float in the lake that surrounds the island, creating a beautiful spectacle of light.

Location and how to get there:

The temple is located in the central sector, still within the city walls, a few hundred meters northwest of Wat Mahathat.

Wat Phra Phai Luang was founded around the 12th century by the Khmer, being one of the city’s oldest temples, preceding the founding of the kingdom of Sukhothai.

At a time when Hinduism still prevailed, it is believed that this complex, dedicated to Vishnu, had a great spiritual significance, even before it became a Buddhist temple.

In the vast area it occupies, you will find several ruins, of which stands out a huge Khmer “Prang” (tower) and several columns. Of the other two Prangs has survived practically nothing, more scattered around are figures in notch, very well worked.

Entrance fee: 100 Baht  ($3 / 2,7€), regarding to the complex of the historical park in which it is inserted.

Location and how to get there: It is located near the Sanluan entrance, on the north face of the city wall.

Wat Mahathat, built between the years 1290 and 1350, is the most visited temple in Sukhothai and one of them most impressive in Thailand.

This vast complex, representative of the center of the universe, was the spiritual center of the Kingdom of Sukhothai. It was there that a relic of Buddha was stored, as its name indicates, whose translation is: the temple of the great relic.

Among several impressive ruins, some in their original form and others recently restored, you will find an impressive sitting Buddha. This image is probably the most photographed object in Sukhothai. In addition to this there are several Khmer Phrangs and a large Lotus-shaped Chedi.
